Himachal Pradesh Introduces Solar Ropeways in Tribal Valleys

To improve accessibility in remote tribal valleys like Spiti and Pangi, the Himachal Pradesh government has launched solar-powered ropeway systems for transporting goods and people. The ropeways operate on hybrid solar-battery setups and can carry up to 400 kg per trip. This reduces dependency on fuel-based transport, which is often unavailable during snow months. The first installation in Tabo has cut travel time from three hours to 25 minutes. Local farmers now transport vegetables and wool to markets more efficiently. The government plans to install 15 more ropeways over the next two years with support from the World Bank’s climate fund.
